Acid Reflux Causes
Many people are wondering about the different acid reflux causes. Many of them have been suffering from acid reflux and being able to determine the cause of such a condition will surely help them avoid such causes so that they would not be suffering from the pain and discomfort of acid reflux.
According to Acid Reflux Causes, acid reflux is mainly caused due to regurgitation or refluxing of partly digested food back to esophagus. This reflux causes inflammation in food tube leading to burning sensations and pain in stomach and digestive tract. Once food has reached stomach, the lid of sphincter muscle should close properly and prevent food from refluxing back. But when due to some reason sphincter muscle fails to do so it results in acid reflux.
Acid reflux is a chronic condition which if not treated properly in early stages it can lead to several other severe complications. GERD is considered to be a major cause for asthma, throat inflammation and other lung problems. Under extreme conditions it can damage esophagus and can even lead to esophageal cancer.

While there may be a relation between what you eat and the occurrence of acid reflux, it isn’t all the time that food is the main cause. For those suffering from acid reflux on a daily basis, it is very likely that there may be some other causes aside from food.
According to FoxNews, a person who experiences acid reflux on an everyday basis is more likely to have an anatomical or medical condition. These conditions may be any of the following:
- Sphincter has low pressure. Acid reflux occurs when the acidic contents of the stomach pass up into the esophagus, and the sphincter muscle (the barrier between the two) has a defect, so it is unable to block the acid. If the sphincter muscle has low pressure, it causes acid reflux.
- Pregnancy. Elevated progestin hormones can cause the pressure of the sphincter to go down. This then predisposes the woman to acid reflux. Once the pregnancy is over, the symptoms of acid reflux are likely to disappear.
- Hiatal hernia. A hiatal hernia is very common (at least 40 percent of Americans have them) and doesn’t necessarily cause acid reflux, however, in a subgroup of patients with very severe reflux, a hiatal hernia – where the upper portion of the stomach moves upward into the chest – can cause acid to reflux.
- Gastroparesis. This is a disorder in which the stomach takes too long to empty its contents.
- Obesity. Obesity can increase the pressure in the stomach area, so for people who don’t have the other medical causes, the sheer presence of obesity will cause them to have acid reflux.
- Lifestyle. People who consume lots of chocolate and/or caffeine (or other food or beverages that may irritate their symptoms), are overweight and do not stop smoking, are likely to suffer from acid reflux.
